"Instead of making ads, think of making content"
This profound quote comes from George Wright from Blendtec...you know the dude that sticks anything into a blender to see if it will blend? If you have never seen willitblend.com or a video from them on youtube you probably have no business reading about social media- but for those who are aware of this viral phenomenon, did you know this was a product of a $50 marketing budget?
Most people in an agency today would laugh at their boss if they were handed $50 to create a whole marketing campaign for a new product, but not George Wright. Through creativity and thinking outside of the the proverbial advertising box of TV and print, George was able to increase sales of Blendtec Blenders by 700%!
But is this venture a reality for any of us marketers who are working in the agencies that were built to play the game of marketing/advertising in 1998 or even 2005? Would your boss rubber stamp the idea of putting your product through hell and recording it for the world to see, as a true marketing campaign? Would you even come up with the idea?
Social Media Marketing has changed all rules. In a climate where America seems to becoming one large corporation (not being political here, just being realistic...how many people do you know, if not yourself, are working at an organization that was just bought by another larger corporation?) SMM has created a "level" playing ground for small and large corporations alike. Now the little man can become just as popular as the big man. Its not a matter of how much money you have or even who you know, its a matter of creativity and brain power! Using your brain muscle can hurt at times, but the ROI is well worth it!
What could you do for your product with a $50 budget??? If you didn't come up with at least two ideas, then you need to go "work out!"
